What Are the Classes Like? 課堂氛圍與學習方式
In the Summer Language and Culture (SLC) program at UVic’s English Language Centre, you study in full-time morning classes (4 hours per day) with students from around the world. 教室裡有來自多國學生，一起透過活動與討論練習實用英語。
Classes focus on real communication: speaking, listening, reading and writing are integrated, but there is a strong emphasis on interaction, fluency, and confidence for everyday and academic situations. UVic 的老師多具 TESOL 專業背景，採用任務型與互動式教學，讓學生在真實情境中使用英語、逐步建立口說與表達自信。

- Role-plays for real situations (ordering food, asking for help, meeting new people) 情境角色扮演（點餐、問路、認識新朋友等）
- Short presentations and mini-projects 簡短口頭報告與小型專題
- Listening tasks using authentic or semi-authentic materials 以真實或改寫素材進行聽力練習
- Teacher feedback on accuracy, pronunciation and natural English 老師針對文法、發音與自然用法給予回饋
Class Hours & Weekly Rhythm 課程時數與一週安排
In the SLC program, students attend 4 hours of English classes per day, Monday to Friday (about 20 class hours per week). 課程為週一至週五，每天約四小時的英文課，總計每週約二十小時。

After morning classes, students join a full schedule of cultural and social activities organised by the English Language Centre, such as campus events, workshops, sports and weekend trips. 早上上課、下午與晚上參加由 ELC 安排的校園與城市活動，讓你在真實情境中繼續使用英語。
- Daytime activities most weekdays (e.g. city tours, sports, workshops) 多數平日下午有活動（市區導覽、運動、工作坊等）
- Evening activities for dormitory students 部分晚上提供宿舍學生專屬活動
- Weekend excursions (e.g. Butchart Gardens, whale watching – extra cost) 週末一日或半日遊（如布查德花園、賞鯨等，部分活動需另付費）
Teaching Style & Class Size 教學方式與班級人數
- Communication-focused: you speak, listen and interact in every class 以溝通為主，每堂課都要開口說、聽與互動
- Task-based learning with real-world goals (planning a trip, giving advice, solving a problem) 採任務型學習，完成真實任務（規劃旅遊、提供建議、解決問題等）
- Taught by trained ELC instructors who specialise in teaching English to international students 由具備專業培訓的 ELC 老師授課，擅長教導國際學生
- Regular feedback on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and natural usage 定期給予文法、字彙、發音與自然用法的回饋
- Small, interactive classes – typically around 15 students per class (varies by level & term) 小班教學，每班大約 15 位左右同學（實際人數依程度與期別而異）
- Plenty of chances to speak and ask questions 發問與練習口說的機會多
- Teachers get to know students personally and can support shy or quieter learners 老師較容易瞭解每位學生，協助較害羞或較安靜的同學
Levels & Placement 分級與編班
UVic’s Summer Language and Culture program offers multiple levels of general English classes, from upper beginner to upper advanced. 也就是說，不論你目前的程度是接近初級或已接近高級，都能被安排到相對適合的班級。
- Students complete online or on-site placement tests to check current level 抵達後或事前完成分級測驗，確認目前英語程度
- Levels are based on grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening 分級會參考文法、字彙、閱讀與聽力表現
- You study with classmates at a similar level, making communication smoother 與程度相近的同學一起上課，更容易互相理解與練習
- Teachers monitor progress and may adjust activities or support as needed 老師會觀察進步情況，視需要調整活動難度與個別協助
- At the end of the program, you receive a Certificate of Completion from UVic 完成課程後，將獲得 UVic 結業證書

A Sample Morning in Class 範例早上課程流程
- 8:20 – 8:30 – Arrive at the building, chat with classmates, get ready for class
8:20–8:30 抵達教室與同學聊天、準備上課 - 8:30 – 10:20 – First class: warm-up speaking, new vocabulary and grammar, pair work
